Role of pre-coat/top-coat weight ratios on optical properties for double coated paper, TAPPICon24
Producers of white liner board/carton are challenged in sourcing white recycled fibers for the top liner layer. Paper and board coating with recently developed coating pigments allow the reduction or total replacement of white fiber plies in recycled packaging paper grades. The use of double coating layers with the same high performance coating color in both pre‐coating and top‐coating is of growing interest. At a given total coat weight, changing the coat weight ratio of pre‐coating and top‐coating can result in significant differences in the brightness, or the coverage, obtained. Lab trials have shown brightness differences of up to 5% ISO brightness points at a total coat weight of 25 g m
-2.
The results show that different relative coating structure and coverage related pore volumes are achieved when shifting the coat weight ratio between top‐ and pre‐coat and that the brightness performance is related to the final total coating pore volume.
