STEAM SYSTEM OPTIMIZATION, TAPPICon24
The steam system is a critical element of the paper machine, and several are
presently operating below their peak performance. Steam system issues can result
in lower production rates and/or increased energy consumption. This presentation
will discuss factors affecting drying efficiency, key performance variables used to
optimize dryer performance, and six rules for energy efficient drying.
The presentation will cover the value of a dryer steam section audit and discuss
benefits of field testing dryers. Areas of consideration are to establish existing
drying rates, measure CD and MD dryer surface temperatures, sheet temperatures,
CD and MD pocket humidities, determine dryer drainage system flows, condensing
rates, and energy efficiency. The importance of benchmarking against other similar
machines for drying capacity and energy efficiency will also be presented.
Furthermore, methods to reduce high-pressure steam consumption will be discussed
reducing operating costs.
