Automating Grade Change Analysis – What is a Good Grade Change?, TAPPICon24

Remote monitoring of paper machine quality control systems offers many advantages to papermakers. Monitoring services automatically check that scanners and sensors are operating correctly, controls are in use and performing as expected, product quality is being maintained, and many other aspects of the operations remain healthy. As well as providing timely alerts with actionable recommendations for solving problems, remote monitoring services allow for expert support at any time from any location. Some other benefits of remote monitoring services include very high uptime, and automatic patching and upgrades. Customers of remote monitoring services benefit from the provider’s experience of supporting hundreds of systems and so the automatic analysis will be well thought out and well tested. With so many systems available for testing, any unanticipated conditions, and corner cases tend to be quickly discovered and resolved. As well, providers are constantly making improvements and adding features.

As part of the continued development of the QCS 4.0 remote QCS monitoring solution, ideas for automated grade change analysis were reviewed. The intent of the grade change analysis is to provide users with a set of summary statistics that will allow them to assess whether the grade change was successful. Although this may seem like a simple thing to do, it was found that even a group of experts required a number of workshops to agree on how to quantify grade change performance in a way that could be programmed for automatic analysis. It may be argued that there is a strong component of ‘I know it when I see it’ when it comes to recognizing a good grade change; while it is a fact that there are different types of grade changes with different criteria for success, and that there are multiple considerations in judging the success of a grade change.
