MULTI-PLY PAPERS - THE INFLUENCE OF THE NUMBER OF LAYERS ON THE STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF PAPERS INTENDED FOR THE PRODUCTION OF CORRUGATED BOARD, TAPPICon24

Corrugated board is currently one of the most common paper products on the market worldwide. It owes its success to the fact that it is a light material (60 ~ 70% of the volume in the corrugated board structure is empty) and mechanically durable rendering both strength and good shock-resistance. Despite its long presence on the market, corrugated board manufacturers are still striving to optimize this product. In particular, in terms of maintaining high strength properties while reducing grammage. To achieve such an effect, it is necessary not only to maintain high strength properties, but also to reduce varibility. Multi-ply forming is one of the methods ena-bling engineering design of the properties of paper products, also intended for corrugated board production.

The main aim of the presented work was to investigate the effect of the multi-ply paper structure on its selected strength properties. The tests included 1-ply, 2-ply and 3-ply papers, made in laboratory conditions, from two types of fibrous raw material. The properties of papers with layers made of mixtures of both pulps were also taken into account. Multi-ply papers were obtained from layers formed separately and bonded together in a wet state.

TAPPI conference proceedings and presentations, technical papers, and publication articles provide technical and management data and solutions on topics covering the Pulp, Paper, Tissue, Corrugated Packaging, Flexible Packaging, Nanotechnology and Converting Industries.
