Graphene improves the moisture barrier of latex, TAPPICon24
Three graphene related materials (few-layer graphene, graphene oxide and graphite nanoplatelets) were used as fillers in polymer dispersions (“latexes”) of polyolefin, vinyl acetate acrylate, styrene-acrylate, styrene-butadiene, and ethylene-acrylic acid copolymers. The coating mixtures were coated onto paper sheets and their water vapor transmission rates were measured. It was found that a mere amount of 1% of few-layer graphene filler added to the polymer dispersions reduced the moisture transmission rate by approximately 20% as compared to the “neat” polymer dispersions without graphene. Graphene oxide did not seem to improve the moisture barrier performance. Graphite nanoplatelets improved the barrier performance by over 40% but were required in much higher amounts to show an improving effect. It was also found that some polymer dispersions were not compatible with graphene, which was shown by a reduction of the moisture barrier performance when mixing graphene filler into the polymer dispersions. This work has significance for the future development of barrier coating dispersions.
