Assessing the Performance of Paraffin based and Natural Wax based blends in Flexible, TAPPICon24
Oil and grease resistant properties of a traditional paraffin wax-based blend are compared to a fully refined
straight paraffin wax, and to several proprietary bio-based natural wax blends that can be used in flexible
packaging applications. All these blends demonstrate excellent resistance to oil and grease (OGR), while being
free of harmful forever chemicals or compounds such as fluorinated compounds (PFAS), silicon, or suspected
endocrine disruptors. Tested formulations have broad FDA compliance in a wide variety of packaging
applications. IGI fully refined straight paraffin waxes and some IGI natural waxes are BPI certified compostable.
Natural wax blends provide comparable barrier properties while being fossil-free options that can be regrown
and sustainably harvested.
All waxes and wax blends, whether traditional paraffin-based or of natural origin, can be applied under similar
conditions using conventional hot wax applicators, such as roller-type gravure applicators, direct, reverse, or
offset.
