The implications and opportunities of operationalized AI, TAPPICon24
As papermaking evolves towards greater complexity and digital sophistication, the sheer amount of
data collected has skyrocketed. While often seen overwhelming, this also means that the groundwork
has been laid for advanced data analytics to elevate production processes.
This paper delves into the transformative opportunities of artificial intelligence (AI) within advanced
process industries, such as papermaking. With a case study approach, we illustrate how recent
advancements in process monitoring can provide manufacturers with unprecedented tools to access
actionable insights. We specify the key elements to consider in order to successfully operationalize
automated model building technologies for sustainable process improvements.
Through a comprehensive analysis and case examples, we introduce the concept and advancements
in harmony modeling in the papermaking industry. Additionally, we explore how that technology can
be utilized for soft sensor development and present preliminary results from practical implementation
thereof.
These unique computing principles are able to identify previously unknown interactions within the
production process and can even determine their level of impact on process runnability. By delivering
those insights in an intuitive form, mill people are better equipped to deal with the intricacies of
papermaking processes.
