PROCESS EVALUATION AND OPTIMIZATION USING TAPPI TIP 0404-47, TAPPICon24
With the current issues the paper industry is facing with retirements and the need for knowledge transfer, common items such as machine benchmarking and process evaluation are being skipped over for a more alluring approach that goes straight to capital projects and other equipment replacement options without fully understanding where the process is and how it measures against industry norms. Basic benchmarking and process evaluation is possible using TAPPI TIP 0404-47.
Through the process of machine benchmarking, engineers, process managers, and superintendents can learn a good deal of information about their process as well as uncover clues to where process optimization should begin. Walking through a couple of simple P&IDs may yield deficiencies in measurement systems that would inhibit larger projects from developing a rock-solid return on investment. Walking the process down to locate different sensors and controls may also yield discoveries in what is causing process instability. Solving these small problems first is known as optimizing the base case and should be the first step in process improvement.
