DISSOLUTION OF FROZEN SMELT IN RECOVERY BOILER DISSOLVING TANKS, TAPPICon25
A series of laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the dissolution kinetics of frozen smelt as a function of smelt mass, green liquor temperature and concentration (TTA). The results show that frozen smelt dissolves more quickly in green liquor with lower TTA and higher temperature. Each smelt fragment dissolves independently of other fragments, at a rate that is inversely proportional to smelt diameter (size) and to the cube root of initial smelt mass. As long as the green liquor is not saturated, the greater the number of smelt fragments, the more quickly they can dissolve. If frozen smelt is allowed to accumulate on the dissolving tank floor, it will saturate the green liquor near the floor with smelt solution. This can increase the propensity of pirssonite scale formation on agitator blades.
