Advancing Paper and Tissue Making Efficiency with AI-based Web Inspection and Unwind Automation Technology, TAPPICon25
Unwind automation technology and AI-based web inspection has been made possible by
close R&D cooperation between machine vision experts and papermaking experts. These
new technologies work and improve the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and total
machine efficiency (TME) of paper and tissue machines and converting lines. The latest
web inspection driven with artificial intelligence advances sustainability, as well as stability
in segmenting and classifying defects in tissue and paper production. The unwind
technology is the only non-marking unwind automation system that detects the MD sheet
position during unwinding without ink or lasers. These systems increase operational
efficiency by addressing defects with automated stop-on-defect and slow-on-defect
features and manages customer roll map data for subsequent processing optimization.
The phrase the whole is greater than the sum of its parts was first coined by the
philosopher Aristotle. This principle can be applied to machine vision technologies.
