Surface Starch for Strength Development: Application, Fundamentals & Best Practices, TAPPICon25

Strength properties are among the main parameters of paper grade development. Production efficiency is directly correlated with strength properties; use the minimum amount of fiber weight, to meet strength property tests (ECT, ring crush, Mullen, Concora, etc.). With the continued increase in recycled board production at the expense of virgin papers, fiber quality has suffered, reducing the impact of increasing fiber weight on strength properties, leading to the need for additives to optimizing production efficiency.

Starch has long been a major additive in paper mills due to its unique polymeric properties, cost efficiency, sustainability, and variety. Starches are added in paper mills internally (in the wet end), to the sheet surface (in the dry end), and even after production (in coating equipment). Optimizing surface starch applications based on best practices in recycled board mills will enable lightweighting and strength development.

TAPPI conference proceedings and presentations, technical papers, and publication articles provide technical and management data and solutions on topics covering the Pulp, Paper, Tissue, Corrugated Packaging, Flexible Packaging, Nanotechnology and Converting Industries.
