Achieving the Right Amount of Strength, TAPPICon25
The presentation focuses on deliverables from the headbox and former being managed in the press section to improve or control Mullen and STFI for packaging grades. It will touch on key press dynamics and what factors can be used as levers for getting into a good operating window that can be managed for the clothing cycle. Some factors to be covered include press impulse, mechanical and hydraulic pressure, nip dewatering, press fabric void under compression, flow resistance, crushing and sheet temperature effects. It will contrast some differences in some basic press types, including LNP, cluster press like trinip, and double-felted shoe press. It will not focus on refining or wet end chemistry impacts.
The objective would be to give the attendees some understanding of hierarchy in strength decisions and some important guidelines to troubleshoot and optimize these basic strength properties.
