Applications and Results for Camera Based Solutions for Identifying Safe and Unsafe Work Zones in Paper Mills, TAPPICon25
Providing the highest level of safety for workers is the single most important deliverable from the management team in any manufacturing facility. The paper industry continues to improve worker safety by upgrading and installing modern interlock and guarding solutions, the use of high-viz vests, forklift avoidance systems and additional fencing to decrease hazards in working areas. This paper discusses the technology and results of adding an additional layer of worker safety though cameras that deploy within the device a neural network framework to determine the presence of humans. These are completely edge-based technologies that do not require a connection to the cloud or on-premises servers to detect, understand and communicate with existing mill safety systems when humans are in unsafe areas and help determine life-saving machine actions. The advances in edge computing and mature open-source software offer an additional level of worker safety that is scalable and expandable with low installation requirements and complexity that can be deployed in all areas of the paper mill.
