Optimizing gloss and opacity in single coated papers, TAPPICon25
This study investigates the optimization of gloss and opacity in single coated papers using various
types of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) pigments. The research focuses on the impact of
particle size distribution (PSD) on the optical properties of lightweight coated (LWC) papers. Lab
and pilot scale trials were conducted to compare broad PSD GCC, steep PSD GCC, and a novel
GCC pigment. Results indicate that the novel GCC pigment significantly enhances gloss and
opacity, outperforming traditional broad and steep PSD GCCs. The study also highlights the role
of clay content in coating formulations, demonstrating that reducing clay can improve brightness
and reduce yellowness. Industrial trials confirm the potential of the novel GCC pigment to meet
the demands of modern printing and packaging industries by increasing the share of calcium
carbonate in coating layers, thus achieving high-quality coated papers with improved optical
properties.
