Effect Of Xylan Deposition Onto Eucalypt Kraft, TAPPICon25

Bleached eucalypt kraft pulp is widely used in the production of different paper grades, such as printing and writing and tissue. Its composition is mainly cellulose and hemicelluloses, with 15% to 30% of xylan, which plays an important role in the physical properties of pulp. Hemicelluloses can improve pulp yield and make it easier to refine. In addition, the same pulp used to obtain xylan has potential to be used in dissolving grade pulp, due to its lower hemicelluloses content. This work investigated a technique to optimize the pulping process, aiming for simultaneous gains in fiberline yield and pulp strength, by redepositing xylan during wood cooking process. At first stage, xylan was removed from bleached eucalypt kraft pulp by alkaline extraction. Then, xylan was recovered and deposited during kraft cooking process. Impacts on fiberline yield, black liquor solids, pulp bleachability and beatability were analyzed. Removal of more than 50% xylan with alpha-cellulose content up to 97% was the main finding, confirming the viability to produce dissolving grade pulp. In addition, a low sodium hydroxide residue was observed in treated pulp, with an alkaline loss of 1 mg NaOH.Kg-1 of pulp. Also, screened yield increased by 0.76%, as well as providing stronger and more resilient fibers.
