Hidden Mechanics of Paper-based Packaging in Compression, TAPPICon25

Compression performance of paper-based packages is important to protect contents during transportation and storage. Understanding box behavior and the relationship between constraints and panels in compression will help with the optimization of paper grades, whether it is a folding carton or linerboard and medium for combined board. Internal and external constraints have an effect on package performance. In actual use, this will depend on contents and placement on a pallet. In laboratory evaluation, this will depend on the test set-up, for instance whether inserts are used or not. This work will provide insight into the deformation and failure of paper-based packaging in compression using digital image correlation, DIC. DIC is a noncontact method that acquires images of objects and performs analysis to measure deformation and motion on a local level. Using both DIC and compression platens, this study focuses on capturing the mechanics of packaging under load and identifying modes of failure. The effect of box size and constraints on panel deformation will be presented.
