Patent Review Part 2: Active Patents in the Paper Industry, TAPPICon25

In the first half of this review, we evaluated all patent applications related to the paper industry based on their primary International Patent Classification (IPC) codes and the year in which they were initiated. That analysis concentrated on the modern age of the paper industry which was identified as comprising the Paper Age (1980-2000) and the Packaging Age (2001-2021). The current analysis will focus further on the Packaging Age by limiting itself to only patents that were granted and are still currently active. The search was conducted in 2023, but because patent applications are not publicly published until 18 months after their priority date, the last year for which complete information was available was 2021. Since the patent landscape constantly changes, this analysis represents a snapshot taken in October of 2023. Active patents not only represent successful research and development but are also patents that companies are paying fees to maintain. The distribution of patents is analyzed based on the hierarchy of patent codes and identifies areas of specific concentration.
