The History of Paper Industry Patent Applications, TAPPICon25
Patent applications are the most accurate and most detailed record we have of technology development in the paper industry. Unsuccessful applications contain the same information as issued patents. This analysis is based on submissions to the three largest patent agencies: the US Patent Office (US), the European Patent Office (EP), and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). More than 35,000 applications were filed between 1893 and 2021. The annual number peaked in 2002 with 945 applications. Patents are characterized by a broad and universal hierarchy of categories and subcategories that define the key elements of each application. This hierarchy is organized into a coding system that was used to analyze all the historical patent activity. This analysis quantifies all the patent code subcategories and identifies the areas of highest numbers where research and development has concentrated.
