Vacuum Assisted Coating of Cellulose Nanofibers onto a Porous Web, TAPPICon25
This study presents a novel vacuum coating procedure capable of depositing up to 28 g/m² of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) onto substrates in a single-step and removing a significant amount of water from the suspension. The application of the CNF layer significantly enhances barrier properties, with a coat weight of 9.3 g/m² yielding a KIT Test rating of 12 and reducing air permeability, even after double folding of the paper. To better understand the system, the coating process was simulated using a finite element model; the simulation results predicting coat weight were in good agreement with the experimental data. This combination of experimental and computational approaches demonstrates the potential of a vacuum-assisted coating approach for scalable and efficient CNF application in industrial settings.
