With recent volatility in pulp and energy prices worldwide, as well as growing concerns about environmental impact, initiatives to improve fiber usage and energy efficiency are a high priority for many tissue manufacturers. While new technology and modern machine designs do offer better performance and efficiency than older technology, it is often possible to achieve significant efficiency gains on machines of all ages without major capital investment. However, the biggest challenge often lies in identifying the most attractive improvement opportunities, so that investment can be directed where it has the greatest impact. This can be addressed by starting with a detailed process audit, to ensure that the most attractive opportunities are correctly identified, and evaluated with sufficient data, before making investment decisions.
This paper outlines a holistic approach to achieve reductions in fiber and energy costs, and presents some real-world examples of successes achieved using this approach. By starting with a process audit and data analysis, then ensuring papermaking fundamentals are done according to best practices, and finally layering new technology on top of strong foundations, it is possible to design incremental solutions to suit any budget, that can deliver significant reductions in fiber cost and improvements in energy efficiency. Depending on the specific circumstances in the mill, these solutions may include technology upgrades, such as process instrumentation or advanced process control software, or even human factors such as improvements to operating procedures. The examples presented demonstrate that it is possible to achieve significant cost reductions, while simultaneously maintaining or even improving paper quality and machine productivity.
