Friction is a significant factor in energy loss during paper and board production. Friction reductions would
have significant economic and environmental impacts due to the large scale of paper and board
production. Deflection compensation is a necessary technology for achieving high quality products in
paper machines with extended roll widths, but it is especially energy intensive.
This paper explores the feasibility of gas lubricated deflection compensation concepts through theoretical
performance estimation and experimental validation at half scale under laboratory conditions. The results
show corroborative evidence on the possibility of drastically decreasing the energy consumption in paper
machines.
