Process Evaluation for Sustainability Using TAPPI TIP 0404-63, TAPPICon25

Companies in the pulp and paper industry have pledged energy and other resource use reduction while encouraging improvements in profitability. Basic benchmarking and process evaluation is possible using TAPPI Tip 0404-47 to see where the process stands from an industry wide perspective. While benchmarking is an informative process in and of itself, it can be difficult at times to quantify process improvements and link them to corporate sustainability objectives clearly. TAPPI TIP 0404-63 evaluates this situation and provides insight into how sustainability can be benchmarked and improved. One of the steps in benchmarking is to determine what should be measured. It is key to remember that if a stream, be it electricity, steam, or water, is not being measured, it is not being managed. What the astute manager manages avoids being managed by that metric. Using the TIP as a guide, walking through a couple of P&IDs or DCS screens may yield deficiencies in measurement systems that would inhibit sustainability projects from developing a rock-solid return on investment for both the financials and the environment. Walking the process down to locate different streams and controls may also yield discoveries in what is or is not being measured. Providing measurements for these streams first is how the base data gets collected for process evaluation and improvement. The TIP provides a benchmarking chart to evaluate each process against what is considered good practice. This paper gives an overview of TAPPI TIP 0404-63 and walks through the steps of how to apply the tip in existing processes as well as how to analyze capital projects for improved sustainability. This is aimed at giving attendees who are newer in their career a simple, repeatable method of how to measure a process for sustainability. This will also serve as a basis for operators, managers, engineers, and other interested attendees to have a refresher training and open discussion at the end to share some of their best practice experiences.
