Fibre Loss in Recycle Paper Mills: A methodology to quantify in main reject streams and overall fibre balance, TAPPICon25
Significant amounts of fibre loss could occur in the wastepaper processing plant in recycled paper mills. The quantity and quality of fibre loss depends upon the sophistication of the processing equipment and operating conditions of the cleaning and screening processes. The amounts of total fibre loss are rarely measured. A methodology has been developed to quantify the percentage of various components, namely fibre, wet strength paper, plastics, metal, and glass present in the main reject streams of recycled paper mills. Due to heterogeneous nature of the recycled furnish, multiple sampling and analyses are required for quantification of the various components present in the reject streams. Reject mass balance trial of a typical recycled paper mill showed about 4% fibre loss based on total fibre present in the incoming furnish. Majority of fibre loss occurred in the compactor reject stream followed by the screw/belt press and sand screw press. Overall mass balance was very good. Based on analyses results of samples collected on the day of trial, the percentage error of deviation is 3.5%, while based on average results of all samples analysed over several months, the deviation is 3.4%. Reject mass balance trial, followed by analysis of each of the reject stream is required to quantify total fibre loss in a recycled paper mill.
