Validation of a continuous digester anodic protection system, TAPPICon25
Corrosion events were measured using an anodic protection system on a continuous digester in a kraft mill processing both hardwood and softwood chips. To demonstrate the effects of process changes on the susceptibility of carbon steel to general corrosion, a laboratory study was conducted employing potentiodynamic anodic polarizations based on ASTM G5 standards, alongside 72-hour potentiostatic weight loss experiments. This paper addresses the operation and maintenance challenges specific to these systems, insights from monthly reports, and the use of laboratory settings to illustrate the impact of wood furnish and temperature variations. Although increasing the temperature of the experiments had a slight impact on corrosion, a drop in corrosion potential had a much larger increase in corrosion susceptibility.
