Suberin-based dispersions for barrier coating, TAPPICon25
Various fiber-based packaging concepts are being developed to replace plastic packaging, driven by demands for recyclability, regulatory requirements, and consumer perceptions of sustainability. The key challenge in this effort to replace plastics is the creation of barrier coatings necessary to protect the integrity of packaged products. Specifically, moisture, oils, grease, and gases must be prevented from permeating through the packaging material. Most conventional barrier coatings are primarily made from synthetic polymers, which can cause environmental problems due to their limited recyclability and biodegradability. To address these issues, biopolymer-based coatings have been developed as alternatives. The current work evaluates the potential of suberin, a natural polyester found in the outer bark of birch, as a barrier material. This biopolyester has intrinsic hydrophobic properties, which makes it an ideal candidate for barrier applications.
