Functional Lignin-Based Barrier Coatings for Paper Packaging, TAPPICon25
This study investigates the incorporation of softwood Kraft lignin (KL) in both pigmented and unpigmented barrier coatings on a Kraft 80 g/m² substrate. The impact of KL on liquid water barrier properties, oil and grease resistance (OGR), and abrasion resistance was assessed. The inclusion of KL did not significantly alter the liquid water barrier properties, while OGR was notably enhanced when KL replaced natural latex, likely due to KL's crosslinked structure and high glass transition temperature (Tg) compared to latex. Additionally, KL significantly improved the abrasion resistance of the coatings, as demonstrated by maintenance of water barrier after Sutherland rub testing, and reduced the coefficient of friction (CoF), facilitating smoother paper converting processes. However, these performance gains were accompanied by a reduction in flexibility, as indicated by the substantial decrease in Kit rating following creasing. This trade-off may require further optimization for commercial applications where flexibility is crucial. Since the study utilized KL from a single source, additional research involving a broader range of KLs is recommended to gain a comprehensive understanding of its performance in barrier coatings.
