Several trends are emerging to support continued energy savings, reduced CO2 emissions and adoption of advanced technology in the tissue industry, including alternative fibers with lower carbon footprints, methods to reduce water and energy consumption, and AI tools to optimize processes for efficiency and environmental friendliness.

Fifty years ago, the tissue paper production process was relatively simple. Mills relied on virgin wood pulp for an energy-intensive process that used large quantities of water and chemicals. In the 1980s, the industry evolved to address environmental concerns, with paper waste and recycled fibers being added to virgin pulp. The industry advanced again in the 1990s to rein in energy consumption, resulting in a reduction of about 50 percent. In the 2000s, the computer revolution led the way in automating processes for efficiency and improved product consistency.
