Editorial: Support for innovation and workforce development, TAPPI Journal August 2026

The tissue, nonwovens, pulp, and technical textiles (TNPTT) sector offers products that enhance lifestyle, save lives, and protect the environment. Most TNPTT products are single use and semi-durable, and hence justin- style manufacturing and swift delivery influence pricing and consumption. While, as per some economists, tariffs and nontariff barriers are not enough to bring back commodity manufacturing, given the nature of manufacturing and applications of TNPTT products, this industry is robust. Boosting manufacturing, enabling new applications, enhancing R&D, and training the workforce will go a long way in growing these sectors. Advanced economies are well suited for investments due to technology requirements, research intensity, quality and regulatory requirements, and the consumer base.

TAPPI conference proceedings and presentations, technical papers, and publication articles provide technical and management data and solutions on topics covering the Pulp, Paper, Tissue, Corrugated Packaging, Flexible Packaging, Nanotechnology and Converting Industries.

Simply select the quantity, add to your cart and your conference paper, presentation or article will be available for immediate download.

Support for innovation and workforce development, TAPPI Jour
Advanced manufacturing is gaining attention in developed economies due to national security issues, calls for developing domestic supply chains, and more importantly, the need for creating jobs. COVID-19 exposed vulnerabilities in the manufacturing of lifesaving and critical items such as N95 masks. Tariffs are considered one avenue to protect domestic manufacturing, but in the case of manufactured products like commodity textiles, a tariff barrier alone will not be able to bring back manufacturing. It is a beneficial move by the U.S. government to boost manufacturing through investments in research and development (R&D), enhancing the advanced manufacturing sector focusing on defense and medical items through the establishment of centers like the Advanced Functional Fabrics of America. Additionally, schemes to grow a skilled workforce both at factory and R&D levels will be valuable.
