Keeping It Centered: A Practical System That Survives Shift Change, TAPPICon26
Every mill has discovered its sweet spots. Those operating conditions where the machine runs clean, quality holds steady, steam usage is consistent, and breaks seem almost predictable in their absence. Someone usually says, “This is where we need to stay.” The challenge is not finding those conditions. The challenge is maintaining and sustaining them. Over time, even the best-known operating knowledge declines. And, a shift change introduces slightly different interpretations on top of that: production pushes speed over stability. A workaround implemented during upset conditions becomes common practice and gradually, the machine drifts away from where it once performed best.
This paper presents a practical framework for sustaining centerline discipline so that optimal operating conditions survive a shift. The core idea is simple: centerlines must move from being static or informal memory to controlled operating contracts that clearly link process variables, quality outcomes, and ownership.
