IMPACT OF REFINING OF NANOCELLULOSE ON CURTAIN STABILITY DURING PILOT COATING TRIALS

The gel strength and extensional viscosity of CNF suspension with different degrees of refining, as created by multiple passes through the homogenizer, was studied. Refining from one to two passages in the homogenizer increased the extensional viscosity of the CNF suspension. Additional refining from one up to five passages showed that a maximum in gel strength was obtained after four passages in the refiner. However, the increase in gel strength between three and four passages was of minor significance. It was therefore concluded that not more than three passages should be used for the CNF production of the pilot trials.

Three different CNFs were produced for the curtain coating trials. The first two were enzymatic CNFs with two and three passages, respectively, through the homogenizer. The trials showed that increasing the CMC content from 5% to 10 and 15% improved the evenness of the curtain. The more even curtain also resulted in a more even coating distribution. Additional refinement from two to three passages through the homogenizer also gave a more even curtain.
