Liquor Testing in Pulp Mills: Common Errors and their impact on Results and Operations, TAPPICon26
For pulp mills, testing of the green liquors, white liquors, and black liquors represents some of the important testing for pulp mill operations. However, due to the inherent errors associate with sampling and testing errors, the testing could significantly impact the operations of the pulp mills. For RGL samples, high solids content and high TTA, could result in difficult of pipetting, resulting in errors. Manual testing procedures, including pipetting techniques, sample conditioning, and endpoint detection, will also impact results.
This paper will review these common errors in mill analytical techniques. These errors are additive and can significantly affect the results. Our investigations with RGL showed that there was up to a 10 gpl error on a 135 gpl TTA. Mill lab testing also showed that there was a 4% difference in the sulfidity (TTA-basis), affecting the mill TRS emissions. This paper will also discuss best practices to minimize testing errors. Alternative testing method will also be discussed that would eliminate much of the manual testing errors in addition to reducing hazardous chemical usage will be addressed, specifically, with NIR spectroscopy.
