Advancing Fiber-Molded Products: Opportunities, Challenges, and Technological Innovations – A Review, TAPPICon26
The global transition away from single-use plastics, driven by regulatory bans and growing environmental awareness, has accelerated the adoption of molded fiber products in food packaging and food-service applications. Advances in fine molded pulp and thermoformed fiber technologies now enable the production of complex three-dimensional shapes with improved surface smoothness, printability, and mechanical integrity. Despite these advances, molded fiber products continue to face critical performance challenges related to water, oil, and grease resistance, barrier properties, and not universally accepted testing standards due to 3D dimension structure, and oil and grease resistance test for PFAS-free products.
This review focuses on the molded fiber manufacturing process, fiber and chemistry considerations, key performance challenges, testing methodologies, and regulatory requirements, with an emphasis on opportunities for innovation in sustainable packaging.
