The roles of micrfibrillated celllulose in coated food service packaging, Advanced Coating Symposium (TAPPICon26)

The use of microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) in the paper and packaging industry is established. Typically, on-site MFC production methods are used to minimise transportation costs since the MFC product is prepared as a 1-2% solids suspension.

Wet stirred vertical media mills are used for MFC production. These mills comprise a fortified vessel equipped with an impeller. The vessel is charged with grinding media (ceramic spheres of 1-10 mm diameter made from calcined kaolin). During operation, a suspension of pulp in water is pumped into the mill. Fibrillation occurs when fibres are trapped between colliding grinding media particles. The process is continuous and single pass. Specific energy input is controlled by flow rate and motor power. The grinding media are the working surface for fibrillation, and their high surface area permits high throughputs and efficient production of MFC. Mills are available having annual throughputs of ~1200, ~400 and ~100 dry tons of MFC, respectively. The designs are modular, multiple mills can be used in a production facility. No process additives are used.
