Operators using distributed control systems (DCS) have often been overloaded during abnormal situations, particularly by alarms. This paper describes methods to reduce the potential for operator overload. Historical DCS alarm data from upset conditions was analyzed to identify opportunities for alarm reduction through alarm rationalization and state-based suppression. Application of these techniques significantly reduced alarm actuations during critical ten-minute periods. The results show that relatively simple alarm management practices can help prevent alarm floods and improve an operator’s ability to respond effectively during abnormal events.
