Evaluating Coating Barrier Performance for Food Packaging, Advanced Coating Symposium (TAPPICon26)
Accurately evaluating oxygen and water-vapor barrier performance for next-generation flexible packaging—especially coated paper and fiber-based structures—requires methods that extend beyond traditional flat-film tests. Surface roughness, porosity, and edge-diffusion pathways in these materials create leakage routes that are not captured in simple coupon testing, yet often govern true package performance. Because of this, specialized preparation methods, edge-management techniques, and dedicated fixturing approaches are essential to properly measure transmission rates through paper and fiber substrates. This paper summarizes practical strategies for film-level and paper-fiber inspection, compares effective sample-preparation methods for coated structures, and concludes with the role of whole-package OTR/WVTR testing—including trays, cartons, and other formats—as the most realistic assessment of final package barrier performance.
