Automated Mechanical Packing Systems (AMPS): Eliminating Human Risk in Hazardous Packing Adjustments for Pulp & Paper Operations, TAPPICon26

In pulp and paper mills, many units cannot practically run mechanical seals and rely on compression packing for robustness against solids and variable conditions. The conventional maintenance model—periodic manual gland tightening—creates recurring exposure to rotating components in hard-to-access areas, while variability in adjustment leads to leakage instability, premature wear, and unplanned interventions. This paper introduces Automated Mechanical Packing Systems (AMPS) as an engineering control that maintains target gland load without routine manual intervention. By compensating for packing consolidation and drift, AMPS stabilizes sealing performance, significantly reduces operator exposure, and improves reliability outcomes. We translate the safety impact using the Hierarchy of Controls, outline the mechanical basis for load decay and sealing variability, and provide implementation guidance for retrofits and new installations. Case structures are provided so mills can evaluate their own results within EHS, reliability, and housekeeping objectives.
