Enhancing Pulp And Paper Mill Operations: Integrating Automation And Data Analytics Within The PDCA Framework, TAPPICon26

In the dynamic environment of pulp and paper mills, continuous improvement is essential for maintaining high-quality operations. This paper explores the integration of automation and data analytics within the Deming’s Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) framework to enhance operational efficiency [1].

We identify four critical elements in the modern, digital PDCA framework:
  • Configuration of parameters for process control (PLC/DCS) and automated analysis tools (PLAN)
  • Plant-wide automation systems with Advanced Process Control (APC) applications (DO)
  • Automated data analysis (CHECK)
  • Ad-hoc data analysis (ACT)

Configuration of process control (PLC/DCS) and automated analysis tool parameters represents the “Plan” phase, defining operational windows and boundaries. Automation systems and APC applications represent the "Do" phase, facilitating continuous control and fine-tuning of operations. Automated data analysis corresponds to the "Check" phase, providing consistent monitoring and decision-making support. Ad-hoc data analysis enables the "Act" phase, offering flexibility to explore new insights and address unexpected challenges. By leveraging these elements, mills can achieve consistent quality improvements and operational excellence. Missing any of these elements can severely hinder progress: lacking automation systems/APC is akin to remaining in the stone age, missing dashboards is like driving blindfolded, and without data analytics tools, improvement becomes impossible.
