Airflow-Based Vacuum Control for Optimized Press Dewatering, TAPPICon26
Uhle box airflow-based vacuum control system is designed to automatically regulate vacuum levels in the paper machine press section to ensure stable dryness and consistent dewatering performance. The system addresses the challenge of varying felt permeability, which changes over time due to compaction, contamination, wear, or differences in fabric design. These variations can alter the dewatering process and affect paper quality and machine runnability.
At the core of the system is an advanced control strategy that uses real-time airflow calculations to adjust vacuum levels. These calculations are based on measured process information and characteristics of valves, which manage airflow through the felt. By continuously monitoring airflow and felt conditions, the system maintains optimal vacuum levels throughout the felt’s lifecycle.
Each uhle box is individually controlled with its own target airflow settings, allowing for precise vacuum management. This ensures that the condition of the felt remains consistent during natural or unexpected process fluctuations. The system’s robustness allows it to respond dynamically to changes in felt properties without manual intervention.
Traditionally, vacuum control has relied on skilled operators to make adjustments with limited data. Automation removes this dependency, reduces errors and shift-to-shift variation, and frees operators from constant monitoring.
The system also generates valuable process data, enabling continuous optimization of felt conditioning. Optimized felt conditioning contributes to improved energy efficiency, reduced steam consumption, extended fabric lifetime, and enhanced overall performance.
