4-step approach to resource efficiency development, TAPPICon26

With increasing sustainability demands from both regulation and consumers, board and paper producers are searching for ways to improve their resource efficiency while maintaining high production efficiency and quality. This work needs to be continuous and systematic. Resource efficiency refers to how effectively we manage our production processes to minimize unnecessary energy, water, and raw material losses. It also encompasses production efficiency factors such as downtime and broke generation.

There are several continuous improvement principles globally in use but many are focusing on quite abstract level what comes into process optimization in board- and papermaking. This article introduces a practical, 4-step framework for resource efficiency development across the whole production line. The first step, Benchmark, identifies our current performance level against industry averages or Best Available Technologies and highlights focus areas with the greatest improvement potential. The second step, Quantify, dives deeper into these areas to define a targeted improvement action roadmap based on technical and economic impact. In the third step, Optimize, these improvement actions are implemented within the current production setup. Finally, the Invest phase will ensure long-term development and maximum resource efficiency gains by implementing the latest, best available technologies to our production.

TAPPI conference proceedings and presentations, technical papers, and publication articles provide technical and management data and solutions on topics covering the Pulp, Paper, Tissue, Corrugated Packaging, Flexible Packaging, Nanotechnology and Converting Industries.
