Paper machine circulating oils operate under severe thermal, mechanical, and contamination stresses, making lubricant management essential for mill reliability. While most paper mills rely on routine oil analysis, many do not incorporate additional tests that provide deeper insight into remaining useful life and overall lubricant health. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of suitability-for-continued-use (SCU) testing for paper machine oils and highlights key analyses that are often overlooked in standard maintenance programs, including demulsibility (ASTM D1401), foam testing (ASTM D892), corrosion inhibition (ASTM D665), ultracentrifuge varnish prediction, and filterability. By integrating these tests with traditional oil analysis, maintenance and reliability teams can make informed, data-driven decisions that maximize lubricant life, reduce unplanned downtime, and lower operational expenditures.
