From Reel to Real-Time: Powering Paper Quality Through Unified Analytics, TAPPICon26
Paper quality variability remains a persistent challenge in pulp and paper manufacturing, directly impacting productivity, process stability, and customer satisfaction. Traditional Variance Partition Analysis (VPA) relies on reel-based calculations performed every 60-90 minutes, providing limited real-time visibility for rapid intervention.
This work presents a unified digital analytics framework that transforms paper quality management from reactive monitoring to proactive control [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] The system streams raw profile data and computes time-based VPA continuously using rolling scan windows, complemented by reel-based dashboards updated at every turn-up. Five integrated modules provide: (1) high-frequency reel-based VPA with variance decomposition, (2) continuous time-based VPA for fluctuation detection, (3) productivity and event monitoring, (4) enhanced control utilization analytics, and (5) outlier reel detection with configurable alerting.
Results demonstrate a reduction in variability detection time from 60-90 minutes to under 5 minutes, enabling immediate corrective actions. The platform identifies underutilization patterns, correlates control performance with variability trends in real time, and flags anomalies through intelligent algorithms. This approach advances VPA from passive reporting to proactive quality management, supporting continuous improvement and aligning with Total Quality Management principles [6] in the pulp and paper industry.
