Ozone is one of the three main chemicals used in pulp bleaching, alongside chlorine dioxide and hydrogen peroxide. Unlike hydrogen peroxide, which is delivered to mills as a finished product, and chlorine dioxide that requires delivery of chemical precursors, ozone is a truly local bleaching agent available wherever pulp mills operate. Ozone is produced from green electricity derived from burning black liquor and oxygen, most of the time generated on-site from the surrounding air. On-site production strengthens mill autonomy and enhances resilience against external supply chain disruptions.
Ozone bleaching has been widely adopted across the world, with successful industrial implementations spanning the United States, Japan, Europe, South Africa, Brazil, and India.
