Impact of Water Reuse on Papermachine Microorganisms, 1997 Biological Sciences Symposium Proceedings
Ample sources of fresh water allowed early papermakers considerable flexibility in dealing with problems on the paper-machine. In very open water systems, soluble chemicals could be dealt with through discharge. Abundant, inexpensive, high quality fresh water has become scarce in many regions. Even more critical to mill operations are environmental regulations that severely limit wastewater discharge. Changes made in response to these pressures can impact the microbes that colonize the machines. This paper will examine the changes in the water chemistry as the level of water reuse increases. It will explore the effects of water reuse on the microbial population and investigate if changes in the water chemistry caused by closure affects the biocides used to control microbial growth.
