Beyond Traditional Tree Improvement, 1997 Biological Sciences Symposium Proceedings

The last decade has seen considerable advances in forest biotechnology both at the level of the gene, such as gene identification, gene mapping and gene modification and also at the level of generating clonal plants via organogenesis or somatic embryogenesis for operational planting. These advances, particularly when integrated with traditional tree breeding, create exciting opportunities to facilitate new product development from forest species as well as adding value to existing products. We will review the status of the forest biotechnology arena at Weyerhaeuser Company and describe the major elements needed to implement it.
