My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
Somatic embryogenesis provides a unique opportunity for sustained clonal propagation of coniferous trees, allowing maintenance of juvenile cultures, long-term cryopreservation and essentially unlimited multiplication. Silvagen Inc. is currently producing somatic seedlings of interior spruce and Sitka spruce in the Pacific Northwest. The system involves proprietary methods for bulk production of somatic embryos from embryogenic suspensions followed by embryo drying, germination and then, nursery production using standard forestry nursery cultural practices. The genetic gain and genetic diversity of conifer somatic seedlings is discussed in relation to current commercial production of spruce in British Columbia. In addition, somatic production process challenges, improvements, and cost efficiencies are reviewed. These include recent developments in direct mechanical seeding and ex vitrum germination of somatic embryos.
