Development of Glyphosate-Resistant Hybrid Cottonwoods, 1997 Biological Sciences Symposium Proceedings

Ineffective weed control in young cottonwood plantations can strongly reduce both growth and survival. Herbicide-resistant trees should increase the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of vegetation control, which is critical to the profitability of cottonwood fiber farming. Using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and indirect shoot organogenesis, we produced 79 lines oftransgenic poplars that contain glyphosate-resistance genes. Preliminary results indicate high levels of tolerance to Roundup@ in a substantial number of these lines. When sprayed at a rate of 4.7 to 9.4 liters/hectare (2 to 4 quarts/ acre) of Roundup Pro*, only minor adverse effects on growth were detected in the highly resistant lines during the first year of growth. Studies of second-year growth and damage, and transgene protein levels, are underway.
