Drainage Improvement Using a Starch Degrading Enzyme Blend in a Recycling Paper Mill, 1997 Biological Sciences Symposium Proceedings

An enzyme based drainage aid was added to a recycling paper mill based in Melbourne, Australia. The machine was a twin wire fourdrinier producing liners and medium for the corrugated box industry. The enzyme, a commercially available starch hydrolysing enzyme blend, was introduced into the wet-end of the paper machine at 2.25 L/tonne. During the course of the trial the enzyme treatment produced an additional 19 tonnes of paper per day, increased the dry-end speed by 22 m/mm, and decreased the Schopper-Reigler drainage (SR) values of the top and bottom headboxes by 20-30 units.
