During the last few years, cellulases and hemicellulases have been evaluated for their ability to beneficially modify pulp and paper characteristics. These treatments involved relatively low concentrations of enzymes over a short incubation period . It was apparent that cellulase treatments generated substantial changes to the fiber characteristics .Unfortunately, this was usually accomplished at the expense of some strength loss .In our work we have investigated the nature of changes which occur at both the micro and macro structural level of Douglas-fir chemical pulp fibers during enzymatic treatments with various cellulase and hemicellulas e mixtures. By measuring the amount and type of carbohydrates released, the degree of polymerization, and the pore volume we will discuss the observed changes in the fiber morphology.
