Effects of Trichoderma Cellulases and Their Structural Domains on Pulp Properties, 1997 Biological Sciences Symposium Proceedings

The effects of Trichoderma reesei cellulases (EG I, EG II, CBH I, CBH II) and their core proteins on technical properties of the ECF bleached softwood kraft pulp were studied. The different types of intact cellulases exhibited different mode of action. Of the endoglucanases EG II caused most dramatic viscosity decrease in given cellulose hydrolysis level. The CBH’s decreased the viscosity less than the EG’s. However, differences were also observed between CBH I and CBH II. The CBD was observed to affect the hydrolysis of cellulose. However, at the same hydrolysis level the effect of the core protein on the pulp viscosity was only somewhat less detrimental as compared with that of the corresponding intact enzyme. In the pulp treated by EG’s the development of tensile strength in beating was different in the case of intact enzyme and core protein. The pulp strength was more reduced by EG II than EG I treatment and the effect of EG’s on the strength properties of the pulp after beating were most dependent on the dosage used in treatment.
