My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Extracellular laccase [EC 1.10.3.2.1, a blue copper enzyme, oxidizes the compounds containing phenolic hydroksyl group, including lignin and lignin-model compounds. White-rot basidiomycetes: Abortiporus biennis and Cerrena unicolor, grown in the nitrogen-poor liquid medium were tested for the stimulating effect of high temperatures on the laccase production. Fungal cultures (Abortiporus biennis and Cerrena unicofor) were transferred from the temperature (25’C) to higher temperatures optimized.for both species, then returned to the initial conditions. In response to elevated temperature fungi answered by increasing laccase activity. High temperature affected not only the activity but also the growth of the cultures.
